The Veterans in Prison Association (VIPA)

From the Veterans In Prison Association, June 2009

The exact amount of veterans who are serving in UK prisons at present is uncertain but Home Office research in 2001, 2003 and 2004 suggested that between 4% and 6% of the total UK prison population may have once been in the armed forces. More recent estimations suggest that there are at present between 6 – 8500 ex forces prisoners in the system. No other trade or profession is represented in British prisons in such a stark way.

The Veterans in Prison Association (VIPA) is run by HM Prison Service staff volunteers in their own time. The association aims to encourage prisoners who are veterans to access services and support that will assist them towards addressing their offending behaviour, ready for eventual release into the community. VIPA is committed to reducing recidivism in the veteran population in prison and will work with partner agencies and veterans charities to achieve this.

Please explore our website for more information about VIPA and the work it is setting out to achieve with veterans in prison.
