MPs debate Royal Centre for Defence Medicine

MPs have been debating the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham.

(BBC, 10 Nov 2009) Birmingham Edgbaston MP Gisela Stuart described the impact of negative press coverage on the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine at Selly Oak Hospital, during a debate in Westminster Hall on 10 November 2009.

The Labour MP said factually inaccurate stories had damaged the morale of recovering soldiers and staff at the centre.

"The media does have a responsibility that goes beyond daily circulation figures," she said.

Ms Stuart added: "Of course when things do go wrong they need to be highlighted."

The Labour MP said she wanted to highlight the "excellent" work being done at the centre, which cares for severely injured military personnel.

Defence Minister Kevan Jones said advances in defence medicine meant servicemen and women were surviving injuries from which they would not have recovered 10 years ago.

He said he believed the Selly Oak facility could become an "international centre of excellence" in defence medicine.
