A pact with France will keep us fighting fit

Rifkind: If Britain wants to remain a global military power, it’s imperative that we cut costs through a new entente cordiale

Writing in the Times, former Conservative Defence Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind MP puts the case for Britain retaining a serious military capability to protect and advance our national interests overseas. Britain’s wars have been, and are almost certain to continue to be, as part of an international, mainly Nato, alliance. That should not just mean the continuation of our strategic partnership with the United States but an historic enhancement of our bilateral defence co-operation with France, which Sir Malcolm refers to as "Europe’s other serious military power".
